Montana State Legislature
Environmental Indicators
State law requires the Environmental Quality Council to gather information on "conditions and trends in the quality of the environment." Paper reports were issued in 1975 and 1996. The council approved this online list of environmental trends in 2014. This online repository continues the EQC tradition of gathering timely and authoritative information that can be regularly updated and expanded. Questions, comments, and suggestions may be directed to jasonmohr@mt.gov.

Water
Montana has significant surface and groundwater resources. While surface water resources may be quantified (see below), groundwater resources are less evident. Groundwater availability is limited by aquifer physical characteristics, recharge from precipitation, and interactions with surface water. The most common source of groundwater are shallow sand and gravel aquifers (see below) along floodplains of major streams and rivers.
